Introduction to Bihar Engineering University (BEU) Academic Framework

Established under the Bihar Engineering University Act 2021, Bihar Engineering University (BEU), Patna serves as the umbrella governing university for all 38 government engineering institutions and affiliated private colleges in Bihar, succeeding the former Aryabhatta Knowledge University (AKU) engineering affiliation.

BEU strictly follows the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) model curriculum. Whether you entered through UGEAC (JEE Main) or BCECE LE (Lateral Entry), understanding how credits, internal assessments, and end-semester examinations translate into your Semester Grade Point Average (SGPA) and Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) is vital for maintaining placement eligibility and scholarship qualification.

Marking Scheme & Evaluation Structure

Each theoretical subject in BEU B.Tech carries a total of 100 Marks, evaluated through two distinct components:

Evaluation Component Maximum Marks Minimum Passing Criteria Evaluation Body
Internal Assessment (Continuous Evaluation) 30 Marks No separate cutoff (12 marks recommended) Respective College Faculty
End-Semester Examination (University Theory) 70 Marks 25 Marks (35.7%) BEU Centralized University Board
Total Aggregate (Per Theory Subject) 100 Marks 40 Marks (40.0%) Combined Score

Breakdown of the 30 Internal Marks

The 30 internal assessment marks awarded by your college department are partitioned as follows:

  • Mid-Semester Examination: 20 Marks (Typically best 1 of 2 mid-term tests conducted by the college).
  • Teacher Assessment & Assignments: 5 Marks (Quizzes, homework assignments, tutorial sheets).
  • Class Attendance & Discipline: 5 Marks (Mandatory 75% attendance required to receive full marks).

10-Point Absolute Grading System

BEU converts numerical marks obtained in each course into letter grades and grade points according to the standard 10-point scale:

Letter Grade Grade Description Grade Point Marks Range (Out of 100)
O Outstanding 10.0 90 – 100
A+ Excellent 9.0 80 – 89
A Very Good 8.0 70 – 79
B+ Good 7.0 60 – 69
B Above Average 6.0 50 – 59
C Average 5.0 40 – 49
P Pass 4.0 35 – 39 (Marginal Pass)
F Fail / Backlog 0.0 Below 35 (or < 25 in External)

Mathematical Formula for SGPA & CGPA Calculation

1. How to Calculate SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average)

SGPA represents your weighted average academic performance in a specific semester. It is computed using the formula:

SGPA Calculation Formula

\[ \text{SGPA} = \frac{\sum_{i=1}^{n} (C_i \times G_i)}{\sum_{i=1}^{n} C_i} \]

Where \( C_i \) is the number of credits assigned to subject \( i \), and \( G_i \) is the numerical grade point earned in that subject.

2. How to Calculate CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average)

CGPA aggregates your academic performance across all completed semesters from Semester 1 (or Semester 3 for Lateral Entry students) up to the current semester:

CGPA Calculation Formula

\[ \text{CGPA} = \frac{\sum_{j=1}^{m} (\text{SGPA}_j \times \text{Credits}_j)}{\sum_{j=1}^{m} \text{Credits}_j} \]

Conversion of CGPA to Percentage

For job applications, campus recruitment drives (TCS, Infosys, Cognizant, L&T), and PSU entrance forms (BHEL, NTPC, IOCL), BEU specifies the official conversion formula:

Official BEU Percentage Formula

\[ \text{Percentage (\%)} = (\text{CGPA} - 0.75) \times 10 \]

Example: A student with an 8.25 CGPA achieves \((8.25 - 0.75) \times 10 = 75.0\%\).

Carry-Over & Back-Paper Promotion Rules

BEU enforces specific promotion criteria that every student must satisfy to advance to higher academic years:

  1. Promotion to 2nd Year (3rd Sem): A student must clear at least 50% of the total cumulative credits of the 1st year (Sem 1 + Sem 2).
  2. Promotion to 3rd Year (5th Sem): A student must have cleared all subjects of the 1st year without any active backlog (zero backlogs in Sem 1 & Sem 2) and must clear 50% credits of the 2nd year.
  3. Promotion to 4th Year (7th Sem): All backlogs of 1st and 2nd years must be completely cleared.

Year-Back Warning

Failing to clear 1st year backlogs before entering 5th semester triggers an automatic academic year-drop under BEU regulations. Always prioritize clearing back-papers during immediate carry-over special exams.
